Advert Development - Initial Ideas

These images shows our first attempt of our CD cover and our advertisement and these shows that we have decided for our advertisement to merge all our band members faces into one to create one face of the band. we came up with this idea when we were doing research of band adverts when they have all the band members into one and this meant that if we merged our band members faces into one they would be different and would stand our from the rest because of how others shows all three band members together where we have just merged there faces together. the colours used for our advertisement was decided by having our main idea on bright colours and if needed changing the contrast between the main image in the middle and contrasted with the background which means if needed changing the background to allow the main image to stand out against the background.

This music video by Franz Ferdinand is a good example of a indie rock music video because the conventions of an typical indie rock music video can be seen in this music video, the conventions shown is lip syncing, lip syncing is shown throughout the music video because the conventions of a music video is that the main singer of the band is lip syncing throughout the music video to enable us to understand who the band members are and who the lead singer is. another convention of the band is having a shot with all the band members together playing there instruments and singing. the mise en scene for this music video is an old fashioned school building because the video is based around and old fashioned projector, the costume for the band is a typical indie rock music video because they are all dressed up in smart suits and casual clothes and these types of clothes can be seen in other music videos based around the genre indie rock, the lighting that is a mixture of high key and low because the video is based around switching between the projector and the teacher speaking.

Modest Mouse 

This music video is an indie rock music video and this video is different to the other music videos that are done by the foo fighters, Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon, this music video is based around paper images of different people and sometimes throughout the music video your able to see the lead singer lip syncing to the music video. the mise en scene of the music video is the costume, the costume is a typical indie rock because they are wearing suits. This music video is different because your unable to see the whole band together your only hearing the music of the lead singer singing and your only seeing paper creations throughout the music video and also your only able to see the lead singer to lip syncing throughout the music video. the light chosen for this music video is high key to enable the music video to be more uplifting and cheerful as well as the lip syncing.

After thoroughly researching the genre, we have learned that bands that belong to the indie rock genre tend to dress quite casually, with a modern twist. This is incredibly useful to us, as we can easily attain these items of clothing and therefore can replicate the Indie image. An extremely common visual element associated with the majority of Indie bands would be skinny/drain pipe jeans, therefore we will definitely include this in the performance elements of our music video. 

While researching Indie fashion we also discovered that denim is a common feature of popular Indie Group's attire. This also conforms to the casual Indie look, as the faded denim gives this "worn/faded" appearance that matches our initial ideas. They are also incredibly affordable, and easy to attain. The other image shows perhaps a more sophisticated look, although it can also enhance the "worn" image. We are considering using a similar item as many ambient Indie Groups feature them and it conveys what we wish to represent.

 

The images below show footwear that we believe helps us as an audience distinguish a band as being part of the Indie Rock genre. This is incredibly practical as I actually possess a pair of Desert boots, and a pair of brown loafers can be easily attained. This combined with the previous elements would suggest to the audience that we are from the Indie genre, and that is obviously what we wish to convey.

The instruments below are typical instruments used by Indie Rock musicians, especially the Fender Telecaster. The implementation of hollow body guitars also adds an elegant look that conforms to the relatively smart attire of the band members. This is again incredibly practical as I own both of these particular models; and will distribute them to the band members during the filming stages. I feel that all of these elements will easily help us achieve the casual/smart Indie appearance we originally aimed to achieve.

Song Details

The maccabees-Pelican 

As a group we discussed what song we could do for our music video, we listened to a variety of music from different british indie rock music videos and after all the research we decided to pick the song pelican by the maccabees.

The song that we have chosen is called the pelican, we have read through the lyrics of the song and has annotated it, we chose the song because the band singing and playing the song are an british artist and we have to use a british artist indie rock band because our theme is indie rock.

we have discussed many different songs and we picked the pelican song and the other reason why we choose the song is because the other band we had discussed to use is an american band so we had to change it, even though the song was indie rock we had to change it because the band was British not american.  

initial ideas

The spider diagram above shows my groups initial ideas for our music video. each line talks about the mise en scene for our music video the performing and the location, we had spent our lesson discussing all the initial ideas and what is above is what our group spider diagram came up to. we have discussed that good locations for our music video would be a beach and street public places because the ideas was in indie rock music videos they are in public places and it would the idea show more. 

Technical Tutorials

In the lesson we had a tutorial on how to take an image from a camera upload the images onto photoshop, then delete the background and add a different background. the cd cover above shows what we got taught in lesson. we took an image or me and jamie and then afterwards, we uploaded the images from the camrea to iphoto on the mac computers, we went onto photoshop and went file new and changed the size of the canvas to make it suitable and the right length and width for a cd cover. we then took the images from iphoto and draged them into our photoshop camvas. we then used the magic wand tool to delete the background off the imaged so all that was left mine and jamies photos. we then took an image from google that fitted with out theme of indie rock really well and placed the in photoshop in a layer that is different because the layer would be behind the previous image, like shown above of me and jamie sitting on the bench we just took an  image from google and moved it around show it would look like out type of theme, for the back of the cover we picked to use the photo of me looking down so it would look like that I am looking down and we used it so it looks like that I am looking at the song titles. 

Roles

the animation shows the different types of job roles that we all have. we had a group discussion and discussed that the music video should be that i should be in charge of editing, directing and camera work and also finding out the locations for each part of our music video. we discussed that we should all be in charged of directing the music video, editing the music and as the animation says we were allicated different jobs aswells as the directing the music video and editing and camera working on the music video.

Audience Research

The graphs above show my results for my audience research questionaire, the graphs tell me that most of the people asked didn't know much about indie rock and the people asked thought that the most interesting music video to watch is a video where your able to see the band members playing the instruments and a music video that had some sort of a narrative that would relate to the song, to make it interesting to watch.

The questionaire results shows me, that more people enjoy listening to rock music because of there are different tempos because there are different genres of rock. The second most popular music to listen to is pop and this was because you are able to dance to pop music whereas on rock music you are not able to dance to rock music.

Many people that did the questionaire download their music that they want to listen to because your able to download for free and the second one was people like to listen to music on the raido, this shows me that people dont go to shops and buy ablums and the acutal cd, they go onto the interent and buy the music or download it for free, or they just turn the radio on and listen to there favourite radio station and listen to music on that.

While doing my research many people listen to Britsh artists and this helped me on my research because I was able to understand all the different types of britsh artists and to find out which is most popular so I am able to see what kind of music that people listen to.

The questionaire helps with my music video because it gave me an idea about how to create the music video, What type of music video and what our genre is. the genre should would be indie rock because most British indie rock artists, also the that i have chosen is to go with a narrative even though the people who answered my questionaire  didn't know what kind of narrative they would like to see we chose to go with an basic narrative of aging because it goes with the song and the theme of the song.

The conventions found in an rock music advertisement depends on the genre of the music, because if the advert was a pop advert there would be bright colours with a lot of bold titles to make it stand out and if the advert was for a rock music video there would be a dark colours with images if the band and there album or if they promoting a concert than a image. advertisements are found in a variety of magazines like kerrang and metal hammer.

The advertisement above is an advert for a concert for motor head, this advert was found in the kerrang music magazine, the advert shows a dark black background and this is usually found on rock music because rock is known as a dark music because the lyrics used in rock music are sometimes about death whereas heavy metal is about the devil. The advert gives you the logo for the band motor head so if you are wanting to go and see the band live you would be able to tell by the title or by the logo, the logo is placed at the top of the advert above the information about the tour dates and places, the logo has got a large size to make it stand out against the other band tour adverts that there on the page because the motor head advert is quite small. the tour dates have been done in small basic writing this enables the the advert to be placed at the bottom of the page and for the advert to be small, the logo and title stands out from the rest of the page because the colours used are bright grey and this stands out from the black background and when people are looking at the advert they can be seen and then once the advert has been seen the person could then start to read the tour dates and places.

The advert above is different from the advert for the motorhead concert because the colours used in the background are high key and bright colours, this makes the it eye catching for the audience who walk past it or see the advert, whereas the motorhead advert used low key light and black colours which show what kind of band that they are, black shows a evil fast pace music, whereas the colours shows in the tenacious d advert shows the music is not as gothic and fast pace as the motorhead advert shows. the advert above uses a phenix image instead of there logo because it shows that the live concert they are performing there new album whereas the motorhead advert shows there logo which means that they are playing a range of there songs. the writing used is bold and bright writing and this creates the advert more noticable for the wondering eye and this will make the advert more eye catching to people that are just walking past and looking through a magazine. the writing size on this advert is better than the motorhead advert because the writing stands out more on the tenacious d advert than the motorhead advert because the motorhead advert has small writing and the tenacious d advert and large writing.

The advert above is an advert for an indie rock band twenty twenty and this advert shows the band members in the image, this is different contrasted to the other adverts shown above, because they show the band logo in the motorhead advert and in the tenacious d advert they show there cd cover the phenix image because the concert is to sing and sho everyone there new album that they have created and released. The advert is a good advert to show the repirsentation of an indie rock band advert to the other adverts for tenacious d and the motorhead advert. the advert is in high key lighting which make the advert stand out and eye catching and the writing used in the advert is low key and this makes the writing hard to read for some people, but the advert is easily distinctive to the other adverts because they show the band members and not the logo or the CD cover.

Skipworth records is a record label that was founded by Paul Bojarsk. The record was based around a dream of paul in 1998. The record label can be found in Glasgow has helped many different bands over the years to sell records and become known. Paul was really interested in music, that helped the record company to expand and the record label is still continuing to expand. The record label was one of the most challenging and exciting dreams and through the that excitement and through encouragement from his friends the records label has had many sudden growth and the bands that they sign up have become well known to people. The record label within the fist two years it had expanded to become worldwide.  the record label and given contracts to many different bands like, fordirelifesake, this band is currently aswell as the band jairus. In the past the record label has also signed bands like abjure, delunge, engage, kneejerk.all the bands have signed with skipworth records in the past and the first two are currently with the record label.

The record label is an british record label and the record label can be found in glascow, the bands that are signed with this record label are as follows, Mogwai, blank mass, part chimp. this record label might be a good one to choose for my music video because the rock label is a british based label and we might not choose the record label because even though the label is british based label the bands that they have signed are not the kinda a record label that we have chosen to do because our theme is indie rock and this record label has not signed many indie rock music bands.

The track record label is one of the most successful and signicant record label of the 60s, the record label is now former cult stranglers member Ian grant. the record label has signed many types of bands like the heatbreakers, Andy ellison, the who and the jimmi hendrix exsperience. the band was funded in 1966, my digi pack i would choose this record label because the record label is because the record label is from 60s and the bands that they have signed aren;t the kind of bands that our music video is going to be based on, the record label might be used as our record label for our music video because the record label is indie rock record label because they have signed the who and they are an indie rock band and the record label is an british record label and that is what our band has to be an british indie rock band.

The CD cover above is an good example of indie rock because of the images that are used to create the cover and the layout of how everything on the CD cover is layed out on the page and the type of font type,size is used to convey the target audience for the CD is, the type of audience they are trying to convey by laying out everything on the CD cover.

The colours that are used on the CD cover to convey the target audience is a dark background so they chose black, this is to convey their target audience because the band is an indie rock band and to show this they have use the colour black and this repirsents rock because rock is known as an dark music and black can be used to shown this, this conveys the audience because the colour shows to the audience that the album is targeted to an range of people both male and female and that they are at any age and are interested in rock. The colour black used for the background is an good colour because it enables the main image that is placed in the centre of the cover to stand out more because the image is bright blue and the black enables the image to stand out, this enables the the CD cover to be eye catching for the their target audience. The colours used are bright blue for the centre image and bright white for the title and this enables the CD cover to be more eye catching for people to see when they walk past and see the cover from the corner of their eye.

The layout for this CD cover is an basic layout because the band is indie rock, indie rock is known as an youth music, through the way that they are dressed and through the type of music that they play. The layout for the CD cover is one image that is a colour blue and is a bright colour and is placed in the centre of the CD cover, this enables the CD cover the stand out because the image is an large image and due to the colours contrast the image makes the cover eye catching, the image placed in the centre of the cover allows it to be the first thing that the target audience see's when they get walk past the and see the cover. The title of the album is an self title and is placed at the bottom of the CD cover, this enables the target to be the second thing to see because if the title was larger than the image many people would just discard it because typically the image is larger than the title. The colour is white which makes it stand out so when the target audience walks past the cover and see the image they would be engaged so when they see the title they would be more interested than if the title was larger than the image.

The CD cover title is placed at the bottom of the CD cover and is bright white to make it stand out from the background colour. The title font size would be around 20 onwards and that makes the title a large and this would enable the target audience to read what band sings the songs and what the title is, the font type is a block type font because all the latters have straight letters and are bold and this repirsents youth because you would young adults write title for different things in block letters.

The music video above is from Foo fighters and in this music video they show the band dressed up and in a plane watching the on the TV there band perfom. the music video is different to the other music video because in this music video they show the band performing on the TV. this is different because instead of seeing them with there instruments and performing and seeing each band individal member, but in this music video you are able to see different bands and you are able to see the band members differently. this is a good example because the members where indie rock clothes like shirt and ties, basic t shirts and many other different clothes that are seen in an indie rock music video, also in the music video your able to see the instruments which is an steriotype of an indie rock music video.

The music video is an good example for the genre music video because the bands music video is a basic music which shows the band memebers, the music video is a good example because it goes with the conventions of the music video because you are able to see the band members, the only thing that is different is how you dont get to see the instruments being played and how to dont get the instruments by the actual band members. The music video is a good music video because it shows the band members taking control of the camera instead of it being just left in one place and then moved from one place to another.

The music video is a common indie rock music video because the conventions that are used can be seen in other music videos that are shown, the conventions is that the main character is lip syncing and at the same time playing the instrument at the same time and the main convention in a music video is lip syncing because that is commonly shown in music videos. the lighting is low key which means that the lighting affects with the mood that is given off by the music videos itself, the costume chosen for this music video is a common costume that is seen in other indie rock music videos and that is casual clothes and this is a typical convention because in other indie rock music videos your able to see that indie rock bands usually wear clothes that are casual like t short and jeans and smart suits can often be seen in this music video. also in this music video your able to see the band performing together with a black and white theme to it and this works well because your able to show the mood of the song in more detail.

Disjunction- This is when the music video has no narrative that is related to the lyric, like the music video above last living souls the animated characters relate to the band but there is no narrative. In the music video above is a good example of an disjunction music video because the music holds a serious of images and a series of imaget that do not relate to the song, the song is called the last living souls and the cartoon people repersent the band members and the animation used does not match with the lyrics, this is the reason why the music video last living souls by garillaz is a good music for disjunction because the images do not relate to the lyrics.



Amplification- this is when the film is cut on the beat and off beat and the images that are used amplifie the lyrics and a narrative may be used and but doesnt have to be used, the band members may take fictional roles like dress up for there music video, the music video above is a good example to show what an amplifacation music video looks like, the music video above is billionaire by bruno mars and in this music video each shot from one location to another is shown clearly by the editing because the editing cuts on the beat, so each shot even though it is in a different location runs smoothly and the music video has good and clear narrative and the even the images and shot didnt always match with the lyrics you was able to see the difference between disjunction and amplification from the music video last living souls to the music video to the billionaire by bruno mars.




Illustration- The music video always cuts to the beat, the images used within the music video relates to the theme of the music video and relates to the lyrics that are sang, the if the music video has instruments playing within the music video you would be able to see the instruments. The music video above is a good example to show the difference between disjunction, amplification and illustration, the music video above is completely different from the others because the lyrics and the movements and the animation all matches reaally well because the song is about a girl and in the music video bruno mars is singing to a girl and the acting is able to make link illustration because the music video has narrative and the acting links with the lyrics.

The location chosen for this music video is an bedroom and this relates to the song because the song is called the lazy song and you can relate lazy with bed rooms and beds. The clothing shirt and black jeans has been chosen because when your being lazy you wear casual clothes and a checked shirt and jeans are known as casual clothes, the props used in the video is monkey masks for the back up dancers and a guitar because the song is played on a guiatr and bruno mars plays the guitar. There is no camera movement the camera stays still and bruno and the dancer and performing to the camera and the camera being still gives the impression that they are performing to on a stage because of how the only way they bruno gets closer is if he moves closer towards the camera.The narrative for the video is they are just going to stay at home and do nothing for the whole day. the lighting for the music video is high key.
